The Hidden Gem of Bellevue: Hiking Coal Creek Falls

Updated: Apr 8

City at sunset, Bellevue, Washington
Bellevue, WA

To those unfamiliar with the Seattle area, Bellevue is just a 20-30 minute drive across the I-90 or I-5 bridge. It's home to places like Google and Microsoft, one of, if not, the major tech capitol of the world. Due to this, there is an air of class and wealth in the area that has given way to blatant rumors. Unfortunately at times, Bellevue is seen as an elitist haven filled with power rich "techies" that care nothing of the outside world. Although there is indeed extreme financial opportunity in parts of this area, it's not unlike anywhere else, contrary to popular belief. Bellevue has the daily comings and goings of any other city or county. It's a great area to raise families, get involved with your community and take life just a little bit slower.

Outside of the cultural and financial conflict that the city of Bellevue tends to bring up, there's a little spot within the Cougar Mountain Regional Wildlife Park, teetering the line between Bellevue and Newcastle that has the power to remind us what's real in this world. Ironically not too far from The Golf Club at Newcastle, Coal Creek Falls provides an experience of escape for those who need to get out but can't spend half of the day on the road.

There are 3 accessible trailheads ranging the hike anywhere from 2.1 - 3.6 miles. This hike is great for families with little ones of all ages, as the terrain is not difficult, but as always, safety first. The goal isn't to "finish," it's to enjoy being in nature. For those who brave the unbeaten path, the areas off trail are filled with foliage and downed trees with the sound of the waterfall drowning out everything but the occasional airplane. This provides a great place for practicing terrain association and gear testing. With the audio input of flowing water, you'll never be too far off trail.

At the turnaround point of your hike, you'll be treated to a 28 foot waterfall that flows best during our rainier seasons. With a bridge and plenty of places to sit along the stream, its the perfect place for a spot of lunch or a cup of coffee. Just don't be like us and forget the gas canister in the car.

Coal Creeks Falls is a magical little place where Seattlites and neighbors can experience the majesty of Washington State without going to far from home.

It's the perfect introductory hike for someone just starting, a good beginning to your hiking season or simply a little get away for those who can't commit a full days journey to the mountains, but desperately needs to reconnect with nature.
